With ROTTE DEL MEDITERRANEO, the Ensemble Mediterraneo of the "Tito Schipa" Conservatoire of Music, Lecce invites audiences on a musical journey through the many voices of the Mare Nostrum. The programme unfolds as a rich musical panorama in which folk traditions, Mediterranean melodies, contemporary grooves and global rhythms merge into a single expressive language.
On stage, a contemporary ensemble performs alongside instruments deeply rooted in Mediterranean musical traditions, creating a vibrant dialogue between the shores of East and West, where ancient heritage meets today's musical languages.
Among the highlights of the concert is the participation of Samuel Mele, an ethnomusicology student at the Conservatoire, composer and performer on the oud, ney, guitar and other plucked string instruments of the Mediterranean.
His artistic work is distinguished by a personal approach that brings together traditional musical practices and contemporary sensibilities, perfectly reflecting the spirit of the programme.
The repertoire follows an open musical route across the Mediterranean, from the brass band traditions of Southern Italy and the folk heritage of Salento to Neapolitan musical influences, before embracing the sounds of the Balkans and the rich musical traditions of Africa.
Each destination along this journey becomes an opportunity for dialogue, exchange and artistic transformation.
The arrangements and artistic coordination of the ensemble are entrusted to Christian Bevilacqua, Doctoral Researcher at the "Tito Schipa" Conservatoire of Music, Lecce, whose research project, The Musical Civilisations of Southern Italy: A Bridge Across the Mediterranean – Research and Repertoire, finds a compelling artistic expression in this performance.
As a whole, ROTTE DEL MEDITERRANEO offers an immersive musical experience in which tradition and innovation meet naturally, demonstrating how every border can become a new space for listening, encounter and shared creativity.
This concert forms part of Armonie del Mediterraneo – Viaggi, Miti e Ritorni, conceived and presented by the Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Agency in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecce, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Tourism under the National Tourism Fund (FUNT) – 2025 Current Expenditure Programme (CUP F89I25002020001).
