About the lecture

This lecture restores voice and visibility to the women who have shaped the history of the Mediterranean, despite so often remaining at the margins of its dominant historical narratives.

Drawing upon literature, history and the cultural imagination, the Mediterranean is reinterpreted as a space inhabited by women whose lives and experiences have generated culture, transformed identities and forged enduring connections between its shores.

The lecture traces these often-overlooked journeys, revealing the richness and complexity of the Mediterranean as more than a geographical space: a living tapestry of stories, encounters and human relationships.

The speaker

Emanuela Bufacchi is Professor of Italian Literature at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples and Scientific Adviser to the Biographical and Thematic Dictionary of Women in Italy.

Combining academic scholarship with an engaging and accessible approach, she offers a fresh perspective on the women whose lives have helped shape the cultural history of the Mediterranean, often quietly but profoundly.

The event forms part of FESTIVAL DEL MEDITERRANEO TRECCANI 2026, curated by Fondazione Treccani Cultura ETS, which presents a programme of lectures, readings and performances exploring the Mediterranean as a living space of memory, shared heritage and future perspectives.

The programme is also part of the wider Festival Treccani della lingua italiana, taking place in Lecce from 8 to 10 May 2026, establishing a cultural dialogue that places language, myth and storytelling at the heart of contemporary reflection.

The lecture forms part of the programme of Armonie del Mediterraneo – Viaggi, Miti e Ritorni, conceived and promoted by the Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Agency, in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecce, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Tourism through the National Tourism Fund (FUNT) – 2025 Current Expenditure Programme (Project Code CUP F89I25002020001).
