MITIKA – Teatro e Mito nella contemporaneità continues this evening, Sunday 17 May, at Teatro Paisiello in Lecce with its second production, AGAMENNONE, by Ghiannis Ritsos.  Starring Andrea Tidona and Carolina Vecchia, directed by Alessandro Machìa .

Curated by Aletheia Teatro under the artistic direction of Carla Guido, the festival of classical theatre returns this year in a new spring edition as part of Armonie del Mediterraneo – Viaggi, Miti e Ritorni, the cultural programme conceived and promoted by the Euromediterranean Cultural Heritage Agency in partnership with the Municipality of Lecce.

The evening features AGAMENNONE by Ghiannis Ritsos, starring Andrea Tidona and Carolina Vecchia, with voice-over by Alessandra Fallucchi and directed by Alessandro Machìa.

Produced by Zerkalo in collaboration with the Appia nel Mito Festival, the performance offers a profound exploration of memory and conscience through the story of a man confronting guilt, vulnerability and power, while delivering a powerful reflection on the futility of war.

Agamemnon, the King of Mycenae and commander of the Greek expedition against Troy, returns home after ten long years of war. Once a powerful ruler, he is now an ageing man whose final act of courage lies not on the battlefield but in confessing his deepest truth to his wife, Clytemnestra.

As though forewarned by Cassandra of his imminent death, Agamemnon retraces the defining moments of his life, not in an attempt to escape his fate, but to bear witness to the few genuine victories he has achieved over himself. Foremost among these is the painful yet liberating recognition of his own vanity.

The result is a deeply human and profoundly moving portrait of a tragic figure whose awareness of his mistakes—and of the senselessness of war—elevates him to an almost timeless dimension. In one of the play's most striking images, Agamemnon is even able to recognise his own existence reflected in the humble labours of an ant.

Admission is free, subject to venue capacity.

Armonie del Mediterraneo – Viaggi, Miti e Ritorni is supported by the Italian Ministry of Tourism through the National Tourism Fund (FUNT) – Current Expenditure Programme 2025 (CUP F89I25002020001).
