Today, Thursday, July 17, at 7:00 PM, the CMCC headquarters (via Marco Biagi, 5, Lecce) hosts the opening of a series of events dedicated to the Mediterranean climate. The first session, titled “Mediterranean Climate: Innovation and Opportunities for a Sustainable Future”, explores the current state of the climate in the Mediterranean basin, one of the regions most affected by global warming.
This event marks the beginning of three meetings organized by the CMCC Foundation – Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change as part of the “Armonie del Mediterraneo” festival, promoted by the Municipality of Lecce with the scientific and organizational support of the Agency for Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage. Combining arts, science, and civic engagement, the program addresses environmental sustainability as a central theme, providing tools to understand ongoing changes and raise awareness about the future of the Mediterranean.
Following institutional greetings from the Mayor of Lecce, Sen. Adriana Poli Bortone, and Dr. Laura Panzera, CMCC Operations Director, the session opens with Guido Rianna (CMCC, Institute for Climate Resilience) presenting “Sustainable Water Resource Management”, focused on the increasingly limited and strategic water resources in the Mediterranean, balancing agricultural, civil, and industrial needs.
Next, Verena Dreyer and Leonardo Lima (CMCC, Institute for Earth System Forecasting) present “The Copernicus Service and Mediterranean Forecasts”, showing how satellite tools and European climate models provide a precise and dynamic understanding of the Mediterranean system, supporting planning and adaptation strategies.
The evening concludes with Salvatore Causio (CMCC, Institute for Earth System Forecasting) and his presentation “Mediterranean Coasts and the Adaptation Challenge”, addressing the delicate balance between coastal development, ecosystem protection, and urban resilience in an area where about 30% of the population lives less than ten kilometers from the sea.
The series continues on Friday, July 18, at 7:00 PM, at Bar Astoria, near Porta San Biagio, with the first of two Mediterranean Aperitifs, titled “The Sea to Come”, featuring Gianandrea Mannarini and Federica Stella Blasi from CMCC. The session explores oceanographic scenarios, emerging risks, and adaptation strategies for the Mediterranean Sea.
On Saturday, July 19, also at 7:00 PM, the final meeting takes place at Barrito (via Francesco de Mura, 67), with “Our Soil: Food and Fire in the Mediterranean Region”, led by CMCC researchers Gabriele Pizzileo, Malik Aljabu, and Shahbaz Alvi, reflecting on soil transformations and food-related challenges in the Mediterranean.
The CMCC events address climate change in an integrated way, considering water, sea, and soil as interconnected elements. Despite challenges – droughts, wildfires, storms, biodiversity loss, and environmental migration – the Mediterranean offers significant opportunities for innovation, adaptation, and cooperation.
The “Armonie del Mediterraneo” festival transforms scientific knowledge into shared culture, combining science, technology, and public policies, and invites citizens to actively engage in a narrative that concerns everyone.
Free entry until full capacity.
