Inspired by Book VIII of Ovid's Metamorphoses, where human ingenuity reaches towards the heavens and desire challenges the limits of possibility, DEDALO E ICARO, OLTRE IL VOLO reimagines one of classical mythology's most enduring stories through the lens of the contemporary world.
The production intertwines myth and modern experience to explore the universal need to exist authentically in a society that constantly observes and judges, yet too often fails truly to see.
At its heart is the fractured relationship between a parent and a child, trapped within a space that becomes at once a physical, emotional and psychological labyrinth. Between them lies a widening distance—generational, emotional and profoundly human.
The performance explores themes of fluid identity, the weight of the social gaze and the search for recognition, while also reflecting on the loneliness of those who long to understand one another but remain unable to bridge the divide.
Daedalus' wings are far more than an ingenious invention: they symbolise the desire to transcend the boundaries that define and confine us. Icarus is far more than the boy who falls; he becomes the embodiment of anyone who dares to become someone else, someone in search of an authentic self.
Icarus pushes forward, breaks boundaries and crosses thresholds. Daedalus builds, measures and restrains. Yet the sun still burns. Flight therefore becomes not merely possible, but necessary—and the fall itself becomes a moment of revelation.
The world première of DEDALO E ICARO, OLTRE IL VOLO opens MITIKA – Teatro e Mito nella contemporaneità, the theatrical strand of Armonie in Scena, comprising three productions of exceptional emotional and symbolic power, curated by Associazione Culturale Aletheia Teatro under the artistic direction of Carla Guido.
Together with AGAMENNONE and CIRCE: LE ORIGINI, the production forms a trilogy that restores the enduring relevance of classical mythology, transforming its protagonists into powerful lenses through which to examine contemporary life. Daedalus and Icarus, Agamemnon and Circe transcend time to confront enduring questions surrounding the individual and society, destiny and free will, vulnerability and redemption.
The performance forms part of the programme of Armonie del Mediterraneo – Viaggi, Miti e Ritorni, conceived and promoted by the Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Agency, in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecce, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Tourism through the National Tourism Fund (FUNT) – 2025 Current Expenditure Programme (Project Code CUP F89I25002020001).
